Despite years in the photo industry, the term “wet plate collodion” was a new one to me…and what a fascinating week it was to learn about this historic technique from Lindsey Ross through her Photograph Your Love® Instagram Takeover! This process is not for the faint of hand. Here in the 21st century when there are much easier ways to take a photograph, it is truly a labor of love.
The wet plate collodion process was primarily practiced from 1850-1890. Basically, the photographer must make their own film on the spot (either on a sheet of glass of metal) right before the photo is taken. I found the aesthetic qualities of wet plate collodion prints to be beautiful. The faded tones, blurs, and flaws in each image make them truly unique and reminiscent of the past. I was enchanted by Lindsey’s Instagram post of a recent ambrotype portrait shoot and its handcrafted look of individuality. What a treasure! Her website at www.lachambrephotographique.com has many more beautiful examples. Also on her website, check out the short film about Lindsey which was selected for the 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Thanks for your week of sharing, Lindsey!
