When long-time customer Stephanie Baker walks through the door at Color Services, she lights up the lab. The friendly manner of this Santa Barbara portrait photographer and her years of patronage make her feel like family. Stephanie’s effervescent personality, along with her artistic eye, make a winning combination that always brings out the best in her portraiture subjects.

I’ve had the pleasure of admiring Stephanie Baker’s photography for the past 25 years, from the time she’d come to the lab with her babies in tow, through the time her nest emptied. The simple beauty of her work has never failed to strike me, usually black and white and cropped tight to the face in her signature style.

At Color Services, we are such fans of Stephanie Baker that one entire wall of the lobby is covered with her portraiture printed on Photo Wall Clings. More than once, our manager has given his family the gift of Stephanie’s family photography, resulting in stunning keepsakes that he, his parents and siblings will treasure for a lifetime.

This month, Santa Barbara is in for a treat as Stephanie shares a 25-year retrospective of her work in a show titled, “Now & Then: An Album of Santa Barbara Faces”. The exhibition serves as a community photo album, and through it, Stephanie hopes to give back to the community that made it possible. She views her role as that of a historian, capturing a moment in time.

Starting September 27th, visit the MAD Academy at Santa Barbara High school and experience the history of Santa Barbara through thousands of faces. You just might see someone you know!

Stephanie Baker has served on the board of the MAD Academy, and has contributed numerous fundraising photo sessions to various arts organizations, including Kindermusik, SOPA (Santa Barbara School of Performing Arts), State Street Ballet and Santa Barbara Dance Arts. She has also done portrait photography for Stage Left Productions, Santa Barbara High School Theatre and National Charity League.
