Yarnbomb-2_v2A unique photo opportunity is coming our way this Memorial Day weekend when the Yarnbomber detonates his biggest yarnbomb yet in the mountains of Santa Barbara at Lizard’s Mouth. Hundreds of artists from 36 countries and 50 U.S. states will join together 3,000 feet above Santa Barbara from May 23-June 8 to embellish boulders with colorful cloaks of hand knit and crocheted fabric. The purpose of the event is to draw people back to nature.

The Yarnbomber is an avid hiker who averages more than 1,000 miles a year in Santa Barbara’s mountains. He claims, “When I’m not on the trails, I’m thinking about them.” In order to spread the joy that he receives from time spent in nature, the Yarnbomber creates explosions of color in unexpected places. Imagine the reaction of hikers who turn the corner and see them for the first time! It would be a magic moment.

YarnbomberOnce a year, the Yarnbomber invites artists from around the world to collaborate on a particularly large installation such as the one this weekend. For these projects, roughly 400 square feet of fabric is knitted or crocheted by hand, with the remaining material being contributed by fiber artists around the world.

The Lizard’s Mouth installation will stay in place for 16 days, and then all traces will be removed. After June 8, only the photographs and fond memories will be left behind. All material will be recycled into clothing for those in need or used in future installations.

If you would like to help set up the exhibition, the Yarnbombomber still needs help. The installation happens at Lizards Mouth, Santa Barbara, California on May 23, 2014 from 2:00pm until the job is done. To sign up, go to www.yarnbomber.com.
